Christmas lights in Martina Franca: an itinerary

Christmas has definitely come in Valle d’Itria . Old town centres are filled with illuminations , which become real tourist attractions. Lately, creativity in decorating towns, old centres in particular, has increased to the point of offering each year real works of art that brighten not only tourists who choose this part of the world to spend the last moments of the year, but also those who live it daily. I’ve wanted to propose here on the blog an itinerary in the old centre of Martina Franca from a while. Seen   the period and the illuminations already on display along the alleys, I’ve thought a little itinerary in the dressed up old centre. I suggest it for an evening walk, with the crisp air that cools your nose, but not so cold to make you stay at home. An itinerary not just for those who don’t know the area, but also for those who, like me, live little far from Martina Franca and want to enjoy a little taste of Christmas.

Domenico Carella: let' go to Palazzo Ducale

Versione italiana It's the end of June, a Sunday morning. For many people it had to be the moment to permit themselves a day on the beach, at last. But, in spite of many prayers, the sun didn't even show for a moment. Big thick grey-marbled clouds loom over the historic centre of Martina Franca . It's eleven. In XX settemvre Square, the "stradone", tourists walk under the trees, near to the benches of retired people: they fix a spoiled trip on the beach. There's a group of children, all with the same hat guided by six adults: a summer camp, surely. Either they have the hybrid outfit of the tourist betrayed by bad weather: flip flops, Bermuda shorts and jacket. They look up in the air and observe the Saint Martin on a horse that is above the arch of the 18th century from which you enter the town. It starts raining. Entering a covered place is a need.

Domenico Carella: Andiamo al Palazzo Ducale

English version Fine giugno; una domenica mattina. Comincia a piovere. Entrare in un posto coperto diventa una necessità.

Domenico Carella: The Chapel of the Sacrament in Saint Martino's Cathedral

Versione italiana "Mother Mary, full of grace..." The sunlight that filters across the yellow glasses of big windows and Baroque marbles of the chapel of the Sacrament shine of an amber coloured aura. From the row of black chairs, a chorus of old women says the rosary before the beginning of the evening mass. For the whole day the foreign voices of the tourists visiting Martina Franca has rung among the benches of the church. Now you can hear just the monotonous tune of orations: San Martino's Cathedral is a place of worship again.

Domenico Carella: la cappella del Sacramento a San Martino

English version «Ave Maria, piena di grazia…»
